Why is Five Counties offering the Abilities in Action program?
There is an urgent community need for autism‑related services. Many families are receiving OAP funding, but cannot use it due to limited service provider availability. Five Counties is seeking to bridge this gap by offering its Abilities in Action program so that local families can access a wide variety of specialized services to support their child’s wellbeing and autism diagnosis.
Who is eligible to use the Abilities in Action program?
The Abilities in Action program is open to children/youth up to age 19 who live in Peterborough, Northumberland County, City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County. Specific eligibility will be confirmed during intake. (NOTE: Your child does not have to be a current Five Counties client in order to enroll in the Abilities in Action program.)
Does using the Abilities in Action program affect my child from being able to use other Five Counties services?
No, it does not. The Abilities in Action program separate from Five Counties programs that are funded through the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services. Participating in the Abilities in Action program does not change your place on other waitlists. We’ll help you understand your options and choose the best pathway for your child.
Can my child take part in the Abilities in Action program, while receiving a similar publicly-funded service at Five Counties at the same time?
No. To avoid therapy confusion and keep goals clear, families typically access one pathway per discipline at a time (for example, OT through one pathway). We’ll talk with you about what makes the most sense for your child and family.
