At just five years old, Emberly has a personality as bright as her smile and a heart full of love. She adores bubbles, water, and stickers—simple joys that light up her world. But Emberly’s journey hasn’t been simple. Diagnosed with PURA syndrome, a rare neurodevelopmental condition, she faces challenges with muscle tone, mobility, and communication.
“When Emberly was first diagnosed, I felt fear and worry,” her mom, Amanda, recalls. “Her diagnosis is rare, leaving us with so many questions about her current situation and Emberly’s future.”
Emberly struggles to run, jump, or climb like other kids her age, using AFO leg braces for stability. Communication is one of her biggest challenges—she’s non-verbal and working hard to communicate using a LAMP device, ASL (American Sign Language), and her own cues to connect with the world. For over two years, Five Counties Children’s Centre has been a lifeline for Emberly and her family. Through speech and language therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and more, Emberly is learning to overcome barriers.
Despite these hurdles, Emberly’s spirit shines. Her main goals now are building confidence with walking and stairs and learning to communicate effectively. And thanks to Five Counties, she’s not just receiving therapy—she’s experiencing life. “Five Counties has shown me that there is so much more available for Emberly than what meets the eye!” Amanda says. “They’ve given her opportunities to participate in music groups, swimming, trick-or-treating, and so much more. Five Counties has given us a community; a family of people who see Emberly as special and unique. They’ve given us inclusion and endless support.”
Amanda adds, “Without Five Counties, life would be much more difficult. We wouldn’t have access to important resources or activities for Emberly. They provide more than therapy—they provide fun, safe, and inclusive education. The staff are a smile, a hug, and a level of comfort for our kids. They create a safe place for their futures; we are forever grateful.”
