Changes to Therapy Services in Publicly Funded Schools

Counties of Haliburton, Northumberland, Peterborough and City of Kawartha Lakes

The current children’s rehabilitation service landscape in Ontario is complex. Five Counties Children’s Centre continues to work with community partners to support students who require Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech Therapy in publicly funded schools.

In Haliburton, City of Kawartha Lakes and Northumberland Occupational Therapy (OT), Physiotherapy (PT) and Speech Therapy (ST) services are provided by Five Counties Children’s Centre; in Peterborough County OT and ST is provided by contracted service agencies while Five Counties Children’s Centre provides the PT services. Beginning January 1, 2019, the way these contracts are managed will be changing.  There will be no changes to the eligibility for service or the amount of service available to school age children

As of January 1, 2019, Five Counties Children’s Centre will be responsible for:

  • receiving and processing referrals from school boards for these services
  • managing the services provided by Five Counties Children’s Centre and other service agencies in publicly funded schools

The Central East and South East Local Health Integration Networks and their Care Coordinators will no longer be involved in the management of occupational therapy, speech therapy and physiotherapy services in publicly funded schools.  Nursing and personal support worker services at school will continue to be provided by the Central East and South East Local Health Integration Networks.

There will be no changes to the following:

  • the Five Counties Children’s Centre staff providing OT, PT, and ST will continue to provide service
  • the contracted service provider agencies providing OT and Speech therapy in Peterborough County will stay the same
  • eligibility for service remains unchanged
  • the waitlist remains the same, but is now overseen by Five Counties Children’s Centre
  • the amount of therapy available from Five Counties Children’s Centre and the service provider agencies will remain the same
  • Central East and South East Local Health Integration Network Care Coordinators will continue to manage OT, PT and SLP services for private schools and home-schooled students
  • nursing and personal support worker services at school will still be provided by the Central East and South East Local Health Integration Networks
  • Speech and Language services currently provided by the school board Speech Language Pathologists will remain unchanged
  • any other services that children and youth currently receive from Five Counties Children’s Children’s Centre will stay the same.
